The worldwide GSM- and UMTS standard for
mobile communication offers generally the
possibility to determinate the current position
of the (mobile) user.
|
| What is behind GSM Positioning |
GSM positioning or locating is simply said
the detection of a certain GSM-network user
or a certain GSM-hardware in a cellular network.
GSM positioning differs generally from the
well known GPS locating. GPS always needs
a special antenna with a view to sky orientation
and a communication to at least 3 (4) GPS
satellites. So a mobile installation of a
GPS-based locating device is much more complex.
Secutrac GSM positioning modules however are operating
fully independent and can be used immediately,
fast and purposefully without any prior installations
(antennas, power supply...). Furthermore
GSM positioning can take place also inside
vehicles, containers or in (ware-) houses,
simply spoken wherever a mobile phone is
(still) working a GSM-positioning can be
done successfully.
Easy Handling and fast Access to the Positioning
Data The Secutrac GSM positioning device is the result of
of several years of research and development
and testing new locating methods especially
intended for security applications and demands.
These particularly developed devices from
SecuTrac are coming with flexibility, that
separate them clearly from the GPS detection
hardware. The GSM positioning takes place
passively, i.e. there is no need for any
a data communication (SMS, GPRS...) between
the GSM locating device and the Internet
portal where the locating inquiry is done
and the result is shown in a digital map.
So it is possible to locate up to several
hundred modules within only one minute over
a direct XML-interface to the GSM provider.
GSM Positioning compared to GPS
Locating The GSM positioning differs from the GPS
locating in many aspects. A GSM device can
be located as well inside vehicles or containers
without any visible external antennas, which
is not possible for technical reasons with
a GPS locating device.
Practice has shown that a positioning accuracy
down to few meters, as it is possible by
GPS, is not necessary in most applications.
For the monitoring or tracking & tracing
of transportation processes it is sufficient
in 95% of all cases to know that the container
or the truck is on the highway ' X ', near
the town ' Y ' or in an industrial area at
the place of ' Z '.
The power consumption of a GSM locating process
compared to a GPS position is only about
2-5%. Therefore Secutrac GSM locating devices have an operating time
in a periodical service mode (1 -4 location
inquiries daily) for more than one year with
the own internal battery.
What do you need for the GSM Positioning
What you need is a SIM-Card, inserted in
a mobile phone or for asset tracking a Secutrac-hardware
for GSM-positioning, a contract with a LBS-Provider
(LBS=Location-based-Service) and an internet-PC.
That's it!
